A Scented Summer Camp: Perfuming Samsøe Samsøe’s Immersive Installation at Other Circle
This June, I had the pleasure of contributing to Other Circle, Copenhagen’s new platform for post-disciplinary design, by perfuming Samsøe Samsøe’s sensory installation SUMMER CAMP. Set within the 4,000 sqm space at The Lab, the exhibition blurred the lines between fashion, art, and experience, a perfect setting for scent to play a meaningful role.

For this installation, I crafted an olfactory landscape built around Betula Alba essential oil, known for its smoky, leathery, and grounded character. It infused the space with the scent of charred wood and forest floor, a quiet nod to bonfire rituals and summer evenings. Paired with ambient crackling sounds and the taste of soft marshmallows, the installation became a shared, multisensory moment.
At the heart of the scenography stood a central bench created by designer Fatima Fransson, using upcycled clothing to give material form to the campfire concept. The art direction, led by Jelena Fijan, brought visual coherence to the installation’s layered sensory storytelling, balancing tactile nostalgia with pared-back elegance.
Through scent, we anchored nostalgia in the present. It wasn’t just about memory, it was about creating atmosphere, immersion, and connection. Other Circle dares to ask what design can be when disciplines merge. With SUMMER CAMP, Samsøe Samsøe offered an answer: it can be sensorial, collaborative, and deeply human.
